Detention signifies the duration for which a container resides outside the port boundaries. If the recipient (consignee) retains the container belonging to the carrier beyond the allocated free period, they are subject to detention charges. Essentially, detention fees are the penalties imposed if the consignee fails to return the container to the carrier within the specified timeframe.
