General Rate Increase (GRI)
A General Rate Increase (GRI) is an adjustment to shipping rates that ocean carriers may implement at their discretion. U.S. regulations require carriers to announce any GRI at least 30 days in advance, so it’s common for carriers to announce a GRI on the 1st of the month, with the increase taking effect on the 1st of the following month. The amount of the GRI can differ significantly from month to month, as well as between different carriers and trade routes.
